Vuk Perovic, acting Director of the Port Governance Agency visited Smederevo and on that occasion the Mayor Jasna Avramovic visited the site of the future passenger terminal.
The occasion for the visit was the publication of an invitation for collection of letters of intent for the performance of port activities on the international passenger terminal in Smederevo. Perovic said that the Smederevo is very attractive location, taking into account the historical and cultural significance of the city. In addition, he reminded that the Agency late last year in cooperation with the UNDP launched a project to develop passenger port on the Danube in eastern Serbia and Smederevo is the starting point of this kind of "Museum of the Danube". He pointed out that this project is a unique tourist and educational offer and the opportunity to get acquainted with foreign tourists unexplored eastern Serbia.
According to him, the passenger water transport sector has been the tendency of growth and noted that in 2016 the number of call rose by about 5% compared to 2015, while the number of passengers disembarked about 4% more than in 2015. "Following these indicators, we are confident that we will be able to talk about the thousandth landing," he said.
Port Governance Agency ports so far, in addition to the three existing passenger terminals in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Donji Milanovac, declared the terminal in Zemun, Kladovo, and Smederevo.
Perovic has invited all interested potential port operators to submit their letters of intent, and added that the importance of passenger terminal for local government is of multi economic development, to improve the tourism sector. "We want Serbia to be plotted on the tourist map of Europe as one of the must-see destinations. I am confident that in the coming period on the same site will be able to officially mark the first landing of passenger ships," he concluded.
