The nautical season at the international passenger terminal in Sremska Mitrovica was opened today with the arrival of the cruise ship “Victor Hugo” carrying 55 passengers from Norway and Switzerland.
The Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Svetlana Milovanović, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure and the Port Governance Agency for their suppor
"The international passenger terminal will contribute to promoting Sremska Mitrovica as an attractive destination on the Sava River. Nautical tourism will strengthen the city's economy and enhance our tourist offer," said Milovanović.
She emphasized that efforts will be made in the coming period to establish a regular ship traffic line between Sremska Mitrovica, Šabac, and Belgrade.
Ksenija Hajduković from the Port Governance Agency noted that the international passenger terminal in Sremska Mitrovica is the first infrastructure project realized as part of the “Sail through Serbia” project.
"With the opening of terminals in Šabac and Sremska Mitrovica, we have completed the infrastructure for cruising on the Sava River," she emphasized.
Regarding this year's nautical season, she stated that an increase in the number of passengers is expected compared to 2023, with around 200,000 people expected to visit our country from cruise ships.
"Twenty years ago, we had only one passenger terminal, in the capital, and today we connect with Europe and the world from ten locations. This year, within the “Sail through Serbia” project, we will open three more new international passenger terminals - in Sremski Karlovci, Apatin, and Ram. A contract has also been signed for the construction of an international passenger terminal in Banostor, so when this port is opened, our country will have fully developed infrastructure for cruising," she added.
Assistant Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Predrag Petrović highlighted that the international passenger terminal in Sremska Mitrovica is a good example of cooperation between the ministry, the Port Governance Agency, and local self-government.
He mentioned that this passenger terminal was opened last year as part of the “Sail through Serbia” project.
"The project started a year ago, and significant results have been achieved during the previous period. Besides the terminal in Sremska Mitrovica, we have also opened terminals in Zemun and Šabac, started the construction of a marina in Veliko Gradište, and we expect the beginning of the construction of the Golubac marina and the terminal in Banostor," he stated.
According to him, the goals of the “Sail through Serbia” project include developing Serbia's nautical potential, increasing revenue, attracting domestic and foreign tourists and investments, and creating more jobs for the local population.
"Sremska Mitrovica is a city with a lot to offer - Roman heritage, exceptional natural features, interesting architecture. It is a city of good hosts, and that's why I invite them to continue working diligently on developing their tourist offer so that more cruise ships can stop here," Petrović concluded.
